"NOTE: A share is a percentage of TV households that have their TV sets on at a given time. A rating is a percentage of all TV households, whether or not their sets are turned on. For example, a 1.0 rating is 1% of the total U.S. households with a TV. Ad deals are usually negotiated on the basis of live-viewing figures, though Nielsen Media Research and the broadcast networks release viewership statistics that include live-plus-same-day playback on digital video recorders."

- May 10, 2008: NY Times on the result of the writer's strike on ratings
- "'House' on Fox ha[s] come back with first-run episodes and recorded ratings among the lowest in their recent histories.
"...one of the most reliable dramas on television, returned on Monday, and its ratings dropped by 22 percent from its average ratings last fall....
"The explanation for this... is simple, said David F. Poltrack, chief research officer for CBS.... "continuing story lines," he said. Viewers {have} fear of being lost in a story line they may have forgotten....
"'House' has serialized elements, but it is mostly a medical procedural. It had been closing in on 'Greyıs Anatomy' as televisionıs top drama before the strike. A main reason that 'House' could have underperformed in its return, Mr. Poltrack suggested, was that viewers simply didnıt expect to see it on a Monday. The showıs regular night for several seasons had been Tuesday."
- May 29, 2007 from USA Today:
- "A top 5 show among young adults, House averaged 19 million viewers this season, up 14%."
- May 12, 2007: We apologize for not keeping this page more up to date. When a show is consistently in the top 10 and usually in the top 5, and renewed way back in February for the next year, ratings don't take on much urgency. The ever reliable "marykir" posted on the Television Without Pity's House Forum:
- "The Nielsen top 20 for the week ending May 6th has House in 4th place....
"Since February, House has consistently been 4th and sometimes 3rd in total viewers, 5th and sometimes 4th in total households, and 3rd or 4th in both A18-49 and A25-54.
"Season through May 6th, according to zap2it, the top scripted shows in total viewers are: 4. CSI (20.5M), 6. Grey's Anatomy (19.3M), 8. House (19.1M), 9. Desperate Housewives (17.5M).
"The Hollywood Reporter has Grey's and House as the top 2 scripted shows in A18-49 for the season through April 29th - basically tied at a 7.9 share."

- "Fox had the three most popular programs on television last week as broadcasters took a breath before the start of May ratings sweeps.... In anticipation of the upcoming ratings push, many of the most popular series were in reruns last week.
"The two most popular shows: the week's two editions of 'American Idol.' Coming in third was the medical drama 'House....'"

- "Laurie's show, 'House,' named after the cranky but brilliant diagnostician he plays on the Fox hit, got more Big Apple viewers than 'American Idol.'

- "'Idol' reaffirmed its power as television's most popular series....
"Almost as stunning as the 'Idol' juggernaut was the performance of the show that follows it, 'House.' Hugh Laurie's brilliant but nasty physician attracted 19.2 million viewers while the Games drew 20.97 million in the same hour. Look for 'House' to land on the competition with greater force before the season ends."

- "An 8 p.m. episode of the show last night averaged a 2.2 overnight rating among viewers 18-49, a slight increase over the 2.0 rating the show averaged at 8 p.m. the previous two Tuesdays.
"A 2.2 doesn't sound great, but for a summer repeat it's decent. Consider that ABC's "Desperate Housewives," last season's highest-rated drama in 18-49s, has barely averaged a 2.0 the past few weeks, while NBC's big freshman hit "Medium" managed just a 1.8 Monday night."

Because the show started out with such low ratings, it still isn't showing up in the top 20 for the whole season. But Bussiness Week Online reported on May 18: "After a slow start, it has ranked in the top 10 or 12 for the past few weeks, ranking and 27th for the season."
